Helvecia took control of Group C with a convincing 5-2 victory against Oxford City Lions to continue their 100% record.

Last year’s runners-up were rattled by the visitors’ presence in the opening stages, with Oxford’s Miguel Pernia striking the bar from distance with less than a minute on the clock. Having hit the woodwork, Oxford grew in confidence and retained possession well, but lacked any real conviction in the final third.

A clumsy challenge by the Oxford goalkeeper gifted the home side a free-kick on the edge of the area, which was eventually converted by Grant Osborn’s cheeky flick to break the deadlock.

There was a hint of luck in the second goal too, as Carlos Silva’s low strike was deflected into the path of Edou Mota, who made no mistake in tapping the ball into the empty net, giving Helvecia a two-goal lead after nine minutes.

Despite Oxford dominating possession, Helvecia were rewarded a trio of consecutive penalties, but the five-time Oxford City Lionschampions squandered all three of them just before the break to keep the score at 2-0.

The second half began as the first ended, with Oxford getting forward in numbers, but Silva’s long range effort struck the bar from well inside his own half against the run of play, to remind City of the attacking threat Helvecia posed.

Oxford were finally rewarded for their efforts when Emilio Jimenez pivot-turned and shot through the goalkeepers legs to pull one back after 31 minutes.

But Helvecia responded instantly with a quick counter-attack that saw Mota and Alberto Pastor in a two-on-one situation with the ‘keeper, leaving only one winner as Pastor restored the two-goal lead.

Byron Andrew then scored a quick-fire double for Helvecia in the final five minutes to kill the game off at 5-1, but Oxford finished the stronger of the two sides, as they pulled one back in controversial style – Silva was down injured, but Oxford continued to play on and consequently scored through Lucas Toti’s close-range effort.
